Baracoa, discover traditional routes inside Cuba

Let us take you all to Baracoa, the first village that was founded in Cuba and one of the oldest and most unique towns in Cuba. Here we show you several interesting and curious aspects that make it stand out. Its amazing geography and wide variety of traditions have made this destination unique among travellers.

Baracoa is believed to be the site where Christopher Columbus first landed in Cuba on his first voyage to the Americas in 1492. There's a monument known as the "Cruz de la Parra," located near the landing site, commemorating this historic event though this same description matches the amazing entrance of Bariay Bay in Holguin, neighbour province in this side of the island.

El Yunque a flat-topped mountain with a distinct shape makes it a recognizable landmark in the region. It's not only a natural wonder but also has a unique microclimate, often surrounded by mist.

Baracoa was relatively isolated for many years due to its geography. The town is surrounded by mountains and dense forests, which contributed to its distinct culture and traditions compared to other Cuban cities, renowned for its cocoa production, and the region is a significant contributor to Cuba's chocolate industry due to its quality and flavour.

Another curiosity is the hat making tradition using local materials. Artisans create unique hats, often using materials like palm leaves. These hats are not only functional but also artistic expressions of the region's craftsmanship.

Together with cacao, coconut features prominently in Baracoa's cuisine. From savoury dishes to sweets like the traditional "cucurucho" (made with coconut, honey, and other ingredients), the use of coconut is a distinctive element of local gastronomy.

Surrounded by the beauties of Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its biodiversity. The Park is home to various endemic plant and animal species like Polymitas, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Giant Owl, The Cuban tody, or "cartacuba," Cuban Hutia among others.

In Baracoa you can also find Punta de Maisí,  the easternmost point of Cuba that offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and is known for its rugged coastline.  Booking your holidays, to enjoy this unique place, will lead you to discover a diverse and never seen-before landscape.
