Holguín Beyond the Parks: A Journey Through Culture, Nature, and Tradition

Christopher Columbus called this region "the most beautiful land that human eyes have ever seen" upon arriving in 1492, and he was right. It is located in eastern Cuba, a charming city known for its cultural heritage, natural beauty, and historical significance. It is the fourth-largest city in Cuba and the capital of Holguín Province.

Founded in 1720, Holguín developed as an agricultural and commercial hub. It is now celebrated for its laid-back atmosphere, historical landmarks, and cultural contributions. Interestingly, it is the birthplace of Fidel Castro, one of the leaders of the Cuban Revolution.

Also known as "The City of Parks" due to its numerous green spaces, such as Calixto García Park: The city’s central square, surrounded by colonial-era buildings and lively cafes. San José Park: A quieter spot perfect for relaxing and enjoy the cultural environment in the surroundings.

Holguín is a city that offers a rich variety of attractions, blending history, culture, nature, and leisure. On a nearby hill raises the emblematic Loma de la Cruz ( Hill of the Cross) a spiritual and cultural symbol of Holguín, with 458 steps leading to a cross at the summit. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and center celebration.

La Periquera Provincial Museum, located at Calixto Garcia Park, housed in a colonial-era building, this museum showcases the region's rich history and culture. Just close San Isidoro Cathedral, which was built in the 18th century, this is one of Holguín's most iconic religious landmarks.

Holguín has also become the capital of arts, with several celebrations along the year like     Ibero-American Culture Festival (October): A vibrant celebration of the region’s diverse cultural heritage, Romerías de Mayo: A yearly cultural and artistic festival attracting national and international artists and others.

Some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the area are among the most popular in the country.  Guardalavaca Beach is located about 50 km from the city, offers pristine white sand, crystal-clear water, and excellent snorkeling opportunities, diving, catamaran trips, and horseback riding along the coast. Nearby, the Bahía de Naranjo Nature Park features an aquarium and opportunities to swim with dolphins.

Cayo Saetía is a small island off the coast, known for its untouched beaches and wildlife, including zebras and deer. It’s ideal for nature lovers seeking a quiet escape as well as Gibara, a charming coastal town near Holguín, often called the "White Town" due to its colonial architecture. It’s also home to the annual International Film Festival.

Bariay Monument Park, the spot where Christopher Columbus first landed in Cuba. The park features monuments and a small museum commemorating the meeting of European and indigenous cultures.
